Imponderabilia, 1977
Its rare for me to have some time in the morning to read the newspaper and have a nice cup coffee but this sunny monday morning I arrived early at work so I stopped by a cafeteria near the studio.
I was reading a magazine provided and I hit on an article about perforance artist Marina Abramović,1946, Belgrade.
She created a really interesting new work for her performance retrospective—The Artist Is Present(2010)— at Moma Museum in NYC starting this month.
The work consits on sitting in silence at a table, passively inviting visitors to take the seat across from her and look into her eyes for as long as they choose, doing whatever they want.
She will perform daily throughout the run of the exhibition, for a total of over 700 hours!!
Artist words:'...So my new work is based on the idea that what is important is less what you do than the state of mind you do it in...'
Last Fall Marina selected 36 young artists from various disciplines to “re-perform” some of her most famous work, such as Imponderabilia and Luminosity.
These young art performers, to get ready for the performance at Moma, were invited to a workshop at her home in upstate New York. Participants slept outside and did not eat nor speak for four days.
The goal of these exercises was to enable the re-performers to become aware of their limits and to find their own charismatic space.
